VanceS: Hi

JudyLo: Hi Vance! How are you?

VanceS: hey ok

JudyLo: Great! So this is my first Webheads in Action.

VanceS: amazing

VanceS: and for a while, it's one on one

VanceS: cool

JudyLo: O.k. I am a graduate from the University of Houston (this December)
EC-4

VanceS: even more amazing

VanceS . o O ( my alma mater )

JudyLo: Really? These last couple of years have been----amazing!

VanceS: I was born in Houston and lived there till the mid 70's

VanceS: I was a hippy in Montrose

JudyLo: I have been here since the early 90's. But thinking about moving
on.

VanceS: graduating in what?

JudyLo: EC-4; Early Childhood through 4th Grade.

VanceS: amazinger amazinger

VanceS: my wife teaches KG1

VanceS: she taught our kids in foreign countries

VanceS: that's how she got started

JudyLo: That is great! I am student teaching at a school that is Magnet for
Foreign Language.

VanceS: is your background in FL?

JudyLo: No; the school is a magnet for language.

VanceS: you mean kids wanting to learn FL?

SvetlanaM joined the room.

VanceS waves to Sveltana

JudyLo: Yes, with Magnet Programs, kids don't have to attend their zoned
school; they can apply to many schools with "Magnet" Programs. The one I am
at is a Magnet for Foreign Language. There are magnets (music, arts, etc).

SvetlanaM: Hi everyone.

SvetlanaM listens

JudyLo: Hi! Good Morning!

DennisOl joined the room.

VanceS: where is the school Judy?

VanceS: hey Dennis

JudyLo: The school is in Houston - the area near Post Oak and Willowbend
Boulevard.

VanceS: My brother has an office off I-10 near there

JudyLo: Hi Dennis!

JudyLo: Small world!

DennisOl left the room (signed off).

VanceS: Hi Svetlana, how are you today?

SvetlanaM Doing fine, thanks.

VanceS: where are you?

SvetlanaM: In London Uk

DennisOl joined the room.

SvetlanaM: UK.

VanceS: what are you doing there exactly?

SvetlanaM: A long way from Houston

DennisOl left the room (signed off).

SvetlanaM: I'm doing my MA TESOL, at Institute of Education.

SvetlanaM: here in London.

VanceS: my MA is in ESL

VanceS: are you doing your MA too Judy?

VanceS: you didn't specify ..

JudyLo: No - BA

SvetlanaM: My course work has focused on online teaching . My dissertation
is on error correction in text chat - looking for students, who are familiar
with online text chat.

SvetlanaM: BA in online technology, Judy?

VanceS: have you found subjects Svetlana?

SvetlanaM: lol - no!

JudyLo: No, My major is Elementary Education - EC-4 - and it is BS
(sorry-typo) early here-- 6:15 a.m.!

SvetlanaM: Judy - the Magnet program uses face to face classes, is that
right?

SvetlanaM: I don't know the US systems.

VanceS: Nelba Quintana has a small cohort of text chatters

JudyLo: Yes; it is traditional classrooms with the students. I am student
teaching now in 3rd Grade.

VanceS: we also have a dbase of text chats at webheads

SvetlanaM: Oh, that's helpful Vance

SvetlanaM: They need to be studying English!

SvetlanaM: Do Nelba's students study English?

DennisOl joined the room.

VanceS: start here with the earlier years

VanceS: http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/efi/chatlogs.htm

SvetlanaM: thank you, Vance

VanceS: license at the bottom of the page says creative commons with
attribution if you use it

DennisOl left the room (signed off).

RitaZ joined the room.

SvetlanaM: I was intending to use audio as well as text chat - but there
don't seem to be any takers. Wait - sorry, I don't understand what 'creative
commons with attirbution' means ...

RitaZ: hi, Judy, Vance and Svet

VanceS: attribution means just say where you got it, credit where credit is
due

SvetlanaM: Is it about following good practise requirements - e.g. anonymity
and acknowledgement of

VanceS: hey Rita

VanceS: creative commons is a kind of copyright that lets people share
freely

VanceS: with some restrictions, like no commercial use, and crediting
sources

SvetlanaM: Vance, I am bound to follow all good practice requirements.
It's just the different terminology that I don't understand.

VanceS: you can click on the link at the bottom of the page

SvetlanaM: Thank you so much for the link.

VanceS: is it Lawrence Lessig behind creative commons?

SvetlanaM: Who is Lawrence Lessig?

VanceS: Google him

SvetlanaM: Hi Rita

SvetlanaM: ok, good suggestion, Vance

JudyLo: Hi Rita!

SvetlanaM left the room (signed off).

VanceS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Lessig

VanceS: woops, that was for Svetlana

SvetlanaM joined the room.

SvetlanaM: Back. Disconnected

VanceS: we thought you were off googling

VanceS: ok here's the link you missed

VanceS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Lessig

SvetlanaM: I was - that's when it disconnected!!!

SvetlanaM: Exactly the page I found

SvetlanaM: hehehe

SvetlanaM: He is best known as a proponent of reduced legal restrictions on
copyright, trademark and radio frequency spectrum, particularly in
technology applications.

DennisOl joined the room.

VanceS: hence creative commons

RitaZ hugs dear Dennis

SvetlanaM: Right.

VanceS: he's recently spoken on the last century being the read only century

VanceS: and this one, the read write one, having traits in common with the
age on enlightenment

DennisOl left the room (signed off).

VanceS: historical perspective

VanceS: poor dennis

SvetlanaM: yes. This century = read write and share.

JudyLo: That's a great thing!

SvetlanaM: But acknowledge what you're read when you share .... (at least,
that's what we have to do in academia)

VanceS: it's our one hope

SvetlanaM: you've*

SvetlanaM: I think the sharing bit is working -

SvetlanaM: it will take time but it'll work

JudyLo: Yes, I agree.

SvetlanaM: Those who aren't sharing will feel left out lol, because the
majority will be sharing.

VanceS: I was listing to a podcast on 21st Century Teching

VanceS: Teaching - Paul Allison, do you know it?

SvetlanaM: No I don't

VanceS: EdTech Talk, Worldbridges

VanceS . o O ( google them too )

SvetlanaM: right, without getting bumped off

VanceS: Anyway, he was interviewing the creators of voicethread

VanceS: do you know voicethread?

RitaZ: I do, like it

JudyLo: I'm not familiar with it. Can you explain?

SvetlanaM: like a text message thread, but in voice.

VanceS: Do you know about the Scope seminar on social media?

SvetlanaM: voicethread.com. Yes I do.

SvetlanaM: It's brill

VanceS: There is a very interesting seminar running Nov 12 through Dec 2,
2007 at http://scope.lidc.sfu.ca/mod/forum/view.php?id=668 - Social Media
in Education

VanceS: at that link there is a voicethread

VanceS: anyway, my point, I almost forgot ...

LeonardiK joined the room.

SvetlanaM: Hi, Leonardi

VanceS: these guys at voicethread were saying that they were so happy they
had a set of users to whom they had given the program for free

VanceS: i.e. educators

VanceS: they had all this feedback, they could spend time on development

SvetlanaM: work smarter, not harder.

VanceS: blackboard, they said, could go out and hire 20 crack developers

VanceS: exactly, but they have in many ways a more responsive product

SvetlanaM: exactly.

JudyLo: Almost like a "trial run"?

VanceS: and in that podcast they explained very well why creative commons
and open source works

VanceS: I should go find it and tag it

PatriciaHo joined the room.

VanceS: http://www.edtechtalk.com/node/2463

SvetlanaM: I can't get the links to open - I had the same problem last
Sunday. I have to open them after the session when I re-read the chat text.

VanceS: top left of the chat window

VanceS: sorry top / right

VanceS: where it says actions

VanceS: see it?

VanceS: pull down and select Send to Pasteboard

SvetlanaM: Aaaaaah!

VanceS: you can copy the links from the pasteboard

VanceS: also Ctrl- or Shift click might get you around your popup blocker

PatriciaHo: Is there sound to this seminar?

VanceS: Hi Patricia

VanceS: we can arrange that if you like

PatriciaHo: Yes, I would

VanceS: do you prefer skype? Or Elluminate?

PatriciaHo: Elluminate

SvetlanaM: Skype, for me. Elluminate costs £s. But ...

SvetlanaM: it's ok. I'll be on my way now and see you again next Sunday.

JudyLo: Goodbye SwetlanaM!

VanceS: we have our own Webheads elluminate

SvetlanaM: Nice meeting you, Judy. Good luck with Magnet and your students.

LeonardiK: Yes, Dr. Krauss is our instructor. Indonesia is a beautiful
country in South East Asia, near Singapore.

RitaZ hugs Nina back, apologizing for also being in another window, kind of
multitasking but not too successfully :-(

NinaTL: Leonardi, are you an English teacher?

NinaTL: Vance, how was Vietnam?

LeonardiK: Yeah, you are right. Currently I am teaching Cross Culture

NinaTL: What does that entail, Leonardi?

VanceS: vietnam was great

JudyLo: Vance, can you tell me a little bit about it?

NinaTL: Vance, can you give me the link for Elluminate please?

LeonardiK: Making sure that the students are aware of cultural diversity and
develop appropiate attitude toward it.

NinaTL: Cultural diversity in the world in Indonesia?

VanceS: http://tinyurl.com/y3eh

VanceS: I seem to be silent there

VanceS: I see Patricia

VanceS: but there is no interaction

VanceS: I'll go out and try again

LeonardiK left the room.

LeonardiK joined the room.

VanceS: |Patricia, are you there?

VanceS: you haven't tried WiZiQ

VanceS: ?

NinaTL: no, I haven't

JudyLo: Nina, I've become a member but I really need to look around to

resource that I will be able to use.

VanceS: The EVO crowd will be there at 15:00 tonight

DennisOl: Hi and bye, Aiden.

AidenY: right V--as usual

AidenY hugs Dennis

MoiraH: bye Aiden

DennisOl hugs Aiden right back

NinaTL: Dennis, tell us about your meeting with Leanne!

AidenY waves bye to all

DennisOl: Oh, it was wonderful.

MoiraH: You met Leanne, Dennis?

DennisOl waves bye to Aiden

DennisOl: Yes--last week, Moira.

JudyLo: Goodbye Aiden!

MoiraH: I thought she was in Mexico?

PatriciaHo left the room (signed off).

AidenY left the room (signed off).

MoiraH: ah .. catching up here

NinaTL: This week they were due to cross the border

VanceS: Here's about Hanoi, for when Dennis finishes:
http://www.geocities.com/vance_stevens/papers/index.html#next

DennisOl: Leanne and Calvin were in Mesa (southeast of where I live)
visiting Calvin's parents.

VanceS: while it's thre

DennisOl: They had more bus problems.

NinaTL: Isn't she lovely, Dennis?

MoiraH: with the cat, of course!

DennisOl: Yes, very, Nina.

DennisOl: I didn't meet Spike.

MoiraH: No!!!!

DennisOl: We met midway between Mesa and NW Phoenix, where I live.

MoiraH: He looks so beautiful

DennisOl: Yess!!!, Moira--and I love cats!

DennisOl: I saw (and spent time inside) the bus, and we had lunch together.

DennisOl: I have a couple of photos that I'll post later today.

NinaTL: I am going to forward an email I got yesterday with funny cat
pictures to Moira and Dennis

DennisOl: We got along very, very well--or at least, _I_ thought we did!

DennisOl: That'll be great, Nina!

MoiraH: the bus is truly amazing rom the photos she sent me - common
interest as we have what we call a camping car but not a bus

DennisOl: Yes, the bus is totally amazing.

MoiraH: great Nina

NinaTL: I just sent it

MoiraH: and they did it themselves

DennisOl: One of the most interesting things was their TV / computer
monitor.

LeonardiK left the room (signed off).

NinaTL: What's the bus like, Dennis? just like home?

VanceS: great you could meet them

DennisOl: Yes, Moira.

DennisOl: Calvin is VERY handy--and a terrific guy!

NinaTL: Leanne said you are as sweet in person as you are online!

DennisOl: Yes, it's just like home, Nina.

MoiraH: never met the MAN

MoiraH: but he must be

DennisOl: The MAN is great--quiet, witty, intelligent . . . . and very
affable.

DennisOl: The bus has a kind of retro look and feel.

DennisOl: I felt instantly at home with both Leanne and Calvin.

NinaTL: Can they cook in it?

DennisOl: Yes, Nina. They have a stove and microwave and fridge.

NinaTL: Awesome

MoiraH: Hey, they live in it Nina - they'd starve if they couldn't ;-)

DennisOl: They also have electrical and propane capability.

NinaTL: Of course, you are right, Moi

MoiraH: a mobile home

NinaTL: I just can't imagine cooking in a bus

JudyLo: Sounds wonderful.

DennisOl: It is, Judy.

NinaTL: They lived in it for a few weeks before they left CA I think

MoiraH: Well, Nina, next time you come to France, I'll take you for a trip
in my camping car :-)

MoiraH: you can do everything in those things ;-)

NinaTL: but it's old and has its problems--that's what kept them in WA for
several weeks in Oct, right?

DennisOl: They also have wireless Net access--so if they're able to
piggyback on someone else's service or hit a hot spot, they can be online.

DennisOl: Right, Nina.

NinaTL: I hope that's soon, Moi!

MoiraH: Book your flight!

NinaTL: I wish!

DennisOl: Here in Phoenix, there were further problems. I actually met them
at a repair place.

NinaTL: I hope it gets them to their destination all right

DennisOl: And from the repair place, we went to the bus, to lunch, and then
back to the bus.

NinaTL: How much time were you able to spend with them?

DennisOl: I hope so, too, Nina.

DennisOl: About 2.5 hours.

MoiraH: What is their final destination? Do they in fact have one?

NinaTL: Well, they are going to friends

DennisOl: They're going somewhere in the Yucatán.

NinaTL: but they haven't decided where they want to settle down yet

DennisOl: They have friends there.

MoiraH: Adventures, adventures

MoiraH: great stuff

JudyLo: Yucatan--long way from Houston.

NinaTL: There is a quineanera party they are planning to attend, I think

NinaTL: but after that--the sky's the limit?

DennisOl: I think they might relocate there.

MoiraH: I couldn't do that with my family any more - they'd linge me

DennisOl: Right, Nina.

NinaTL: linge?

NinaTL: lynch?

DennisOl: Right! Linge?

MoiraH: sorry, linch

MoiraH: ;-)

DennisOl: Ah! LOL

NinaTL: lynching has become a hot topic again here

DennisOl chuckles when he sees that even Moira makes typos

MoiraH: yes, Nina

MoiraH: ?

NinaTL: idiots are hanging nooses on college campuses

MoiraH now now Dennis, you know I'm the typo Queen

DennisOl: I make plenty of them, but somehow I figured you seldom made
typos, Moira.

NinaTL: It's a very powerful symbol here because of the listory during the
civil rights movement and before

MoiraH: ALL the time

NinaTL: history

DennisOl: Then you and I are a mixed set, Moira.

VanceS: IMy computer is not letting me typie ehre

MoiraH: especially Sundays after a lovely meal

NinaTL: One was found outside the Nyumburu Cultural Center here at U
Maryland

DennisOl: It comes with typing too fast, I think--and hitting "send" or
"enter" even more quickly.

MoiraH: or just not paying attention ;-)

NinaTL: speaking of typos, vance...

DennisOl: That, too, Moira! ;-)

NinaTL: I was at a party last night and I ate too much

MoiraH: amongst friends who don't judge :-)

NinaTL: I am too old for that I guess--I felt awful!

VanceS: no, when I type the letters are not appearing as I type them

DennisOl: I know that feeling, Nina!

NinaTL: I still feel a little odd

DennisOl: Hmmm. Very interesting, Vance!

MoiraH: you shouldn't eat, Nina, you should dance :-)

NinaTL: They had chili

NinaTL: There was no dancing at the party

NinaTL: It was a chili-music party

DennisOl: Yes! Opa! Opa! Opa!

NinaTL: That was last week, Dennis--I danced a lot at the Ikariotes dance in
Baltimore

VanceS: something is really eating my computer memory

NinaTL: It was awesome!

DennisOl: Terrific, Nina!

NinaTL: a virus, Vance? hope not

DennisOl: Funny (to me) story:

DennisOl: I was at a function where a Russian and a Greek bishop were
present.

DennisOl: Everyone was having a great time.

MoiraH: and???

DennisOl: The Greek bishop said, "Yassou!"

DennisOl: The Russian bishop said, "Gesundheit!"

DennisOl: end of story

MoiraH: really?

NinaTL: That is funny LOL

DennisOl: Really. It actually happened.

NinaTL: Who sneezed?

DennisOl: Yes, LOL.

NinaTL: Moi, because Gesundheit is Jewish here, not german

DennisOl: No one. The Russian bishop was trying to be witty. "Yassou"
sounded like a sneeze to him.

JudyLo: Funny!

DennisOl: It was one of those polyglottal pun things.

NinaTL: OK, even better

MoiraH: true, Im' not a good Jewish mom, am I, Nina? ;-)

NinaTL: don't know, you've never tried to feed me LOL

DennisOl: The educated and/or semi-educated folks understood it, but the
mostly Greek and mostly Russian speakers didn't.

MoiraH: although I'm accused of it all the time

NinaTL: But Greeks also use yeia sou when somebody sneezes, in addition to
hello and goodbye

NinaTL: It's a multi-tasking word

DennisOl: The Russian bishop knew that, I think.

DennisOl: And so did the Greek bishop, of course.

NinaTL: apparently so!

DennisOl: Apparently!

MoiraH: well, if we're only talking about sneezing, Gesundheit is correct,
but why say it in German and not Russion?

NinaTL: I have a pretty easy day ahead of me here

DennisOl: There were a smattering of chuckles among the crowd attending the
event, but it was one of those rarified attempts at tongue-in-cheek humor
that evaded most.

NinaTL: What do Russians say? I've forgotten

MoiraH: no idea

NinaTL: maybe they don't acknowledge the sneeze

MoiraH: pass the tissue

NinaTL: One of the languages I studied doesn't

DennisOl: Russians say "Zdoroviye!" (Health)

NinaTL: OK

MoiraH: thank you supersonic ;-)

NinaTL: like us here with coughs

NinaTL: we don't acknowledge them at all

DennisOl: Japanese and Koreans don't say anything. They ignore sneezes.

MoiraH: aren't they muffled in the nose wraps ;-)

NinaTL: Saying something has something to do with superstition that one's
soul might escape with the sneeze, if memory serves

DennisOl: I'm not sure what Chinese do.

NinaTL: too bad Aiden has left

DennisOl: Yes, I think you're probably right.

CaroleAH joined the room.

DennisOl: Yes, too bad.

NinaTL: Hello, Carole

MoiraH: Hi Carole

JudyLo: Hi Carole.

NinaTL: I see you teach special ed

CaroleAH: Hello, I see I entered the room after joining

MoiraH: Any way, you lovely guys, I must leave for another meeting so it was
great catching up here

MoiraH: Going to NY, Nina?

CaroleAH: Yes, I do.

NinaTL: We are mainly ESL/EFL teachers who meet here every Sunday

DennisOl: Also, in most Western European cultures, sneezes have a historic
connection to the days of the Black Plague . . . so we say "Salud!" or "God
bless you!" or "Gesundheit" as a kind of protective measure.

DennisOl: Hi, Carole.

NinaTL: I plan to Moi, yes!

NinaTL: I submitted a proposal which is currently in limbo

MoiraH: Whooppeee

NinaTL: You too?????

DennisOl: Great, Nina!

DennisOl: You won't hear for a while from TESOL.

MoiraH: Maybe ..... still hesitating

DennisOl: I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

NinaTL: I will probably end up doing it at the EV

CaroleAH: Okay, I fugured out how to access profiles.

NinaTL: cheaper than Seattle, at least getting there

MoiraH: It's been a while since I was in NY, so I'll need 'natives' to help
me get around :-)

NinaTL: Remember last year Paula E suggested we rent an apt for webheads?

DennisOl: That'd be great, Nina. I love the EV. I can participate live in it
even though I'm in Phoenix.

NinaTL: I am a native (I was born there) but not so good at getting around
anymore I'm afraid

DennisOl: Great, Carole.

MoiraH: but you still speak the lingo?

NinaTL: Quick learner, Carole!

DennisOl: Right, Nina.

VanceS: I've got to go guys

NinaTL: I don't think I ever spoke like a New Yorker

DennisOl: And in the case of NYC, "the more things change, the more things
change."

NinaTL: Good to see/hear you today, vance

NinaTL: have a good wekk

NinaTL: week

CaroleAH: Is this what they meant about asking to join in when approaching a
person's personal office space?

MoiraH: One of my colleagues is from N Y and boy do we have a scream with
her expressions - Jewish too

VanceS: Just when I've shut enough programs that this starts working again

VanceS: social life calls

NinaTL: This is the reception area, Carole

VanceS: byeeee

MoiraH: bye V

DennisOl: I'm glad things are working, Vance. Bye!

NinaTL: Everybody comes here unless you set another room as your default
